Why Are Most Red States Socialist/Welfare States?

I am from San Francisco, and from all the crap we get from the conservatives, this city gives an insane amount of money to the federal government, much more than it gets, and much of it goes to the hokey red states. Yes, we keep them in business. Hey, somebody's gotta bring the bread home!
