What will happen if BSL continues?

Will this be the end of one (or more) of a great American dog breed? Will the Pit Bull breed go extinct? I read my local newspaper that the city has banned Pitties! I was pissed...one because I WORK for the paper that put it in there (on the front page no less) and two..there are NO Pit Bulls registered with the city..NOR have there been ANY attacks by a Pittie or a bully breed recently...if EVER! So I can't figure it out. Maybe I'm in a town full of "sheeple" following the media blitz of the Pittie breed. It hurt me to read that. I love Pits! I can say with confidence that I've never met a truely MEAN Pittie! Dog Aggressive, yes...but NEVER human aggressive. There are MANY MANY MANY people out there that are against BSL...so why is it growing? Because there are more irresponsible dog owners than there are people that advocate this great breed and everything they stand for?
